Grima
A self-taught jeweller, Andrew Grima revolutionised jewellery design and is viewed as one of the most innovative designers in jewellery history.
Early History
After working for his father-in-law's London-based jewellery business, Andrew went on to create bespoke pieces in the sixties and seventies. These achieved international acclaim. He won various awards for his work, including the Duke of Edinburgh Prize for Elegant Design.
One of the greatest modernist jewellery designers, he initially started in an administrative role in his father in laws London based jewellery company, his degree in mechanical engineering propelled him to explore various methods of jewellery production.
Post 1960s
Motivated by a fascination with technicalities of design, his pieces were completely revolutionary in the 1960’s. Unlike jewellers before him and his contemporaries, diamonds were not the principle gem the piece focused on. For the first time bold and more unusual gemstones - such as watermelon tourmaline - were centre stage. He took advantage of the natural inclusions and colour zoning of the stone, features which would have been seen as an imperfection, were now crucial to the composition.
After his passing in 2007, it remains a much loved family-run business. His bold and dramatic designs have stood the test of time, with Grima remaining one of the most in demand brands in the auction market.
