Mikimoto

Kokichi Mikimoto, born in 1858, emerged as a distinguished figure in the production and design of the world's finest pearls and pearl jewellery. Recognising the rarity of natural pearls and their exclusivity to the affluent, Mikimoto embarked on a quest to culture pearls, driven by his lifelong aspiration.

In 1893, Mikimoto achieved a historic milestone by successfully cultivating the world's first cultured Akoya pearl, marking a pivotal moment in pearl cultivation history. His pioneering efforts extended to the cultivation of various pearl varieties, including the prized South Sea cultured pearls, renowned for their size and scarcity.

Fusing traditional Japanese metalworking craftsmanship with European manufacturing techniques, Mikimoto crafted a distinctive style that laid the groundwork for modern jewellery production in Japan. Establishing his inaugural pearl boutique in Tokyo in 1899, Mikimoto expanded his presence to London and Paris, showcasing his work and elevating the brand's prominence on the international stage.

Today, Mikimoto jewellery holds a prominent place in auctions, featuring a diverse range of pieces spanning various price points. Fine Jewellery auctions frequently highlight Mikimoto Tahitian and South Sea pearls, alongside creations incorporating gemstones such as sapphires, diamonds, and topazes from esteemed lines like Pearls In Motion, World Of Creativity, and Rhapsody.
