Lot Description

Victorian military interest coffee pot, the ovoid body each side with applied badge for the 96th Regiment, presentation engraving and stylised Egyptian sphinx surmounted hinged lid. Hallmarked Elkington & Co (Frederick Elkington) London 1880. Total height measuring 11 1/4 inches (28.5 cm), weight 29.2 ozt (908 grams).


'Presented to the Officers 96th Regiment 1881 by Captain C.P. Ridley, Captain A.E. Simpson, Lieut: W. Bertram, Lieut: C.R. Pearce, Lieut: C.C. Melvill.'

The coffee pot displays some obvious signs of wear and tear along with general scratches, marks and tarnishing. The lid is miss-shaped and does not sit flush or straight, the handle is loose with missing pins, shallow dent to the body, denting to the base and the coffee pot now rocks when sat on a flat surface, the applied badges are rubbed with loss of definition and detail. The hallmarks to the underside are clear and legible, also numbered 1901. The finial bears a Victorian duty mark, standard mark and a different makers mark ?C.
