Lot 240

Lot Description

A 17th century style seal top spoon, the baluster terminal with traces of gilding, struck once in the bowl and three times on the reverse of the lower stem with a 'castle' mark in a shield shape punch (marks on reverse are partly obscured).  Large repair to the bowl just below the mark.  Length measuring 6 1/2 inches (16.5 cm), weight 1.56 ozt (48.71 grams).

Postage: Auction Default

Weight: No

Total lot weight: No

The spoon displays general wear and surface marks and scratches.  There are also some small nicks in the metal.  The baluster shape terminal does appear to have traces of gilding.  There is a very large repair to the spoon bowl, which involves the greater part of the bowl.  It is very evident as there is a visible line across just below the struck mark and also a variance in the colour of the metal.  The struck 'castle' mark to the front of the bowl is still fairly clear and legible, however the three similar marks to the reverse of the lower stem are all partly obscured (two in particular).
