This oil painting is unsigned - we have removed the painting from the frame to confirm this.

The label verso reads “SIR JOHN LAVERY R.A. THE MARKET PLACE TANGIERS - signed, and signed, inscribed and dated 1912 on the reverse” - this would appear to have been cut from a sale catalogue. There is torn paper above this which may be remnants of an old label.

The paint is relatively thin overall, with the texture of the canvas weave prominent, particularly to the right half in the corners. The canvas is laid down onto plyboard. Whilst the figures are quite well painted, the is a lack of depth to the paint which should (if Lavery) have thick impasto. There is surface dirt but no damage is apparent.

The swept gilt frame is of later date.
