Lot Description

An Edwardian silver-cased mantel clock by William Comyns, the French style case of waisted form on scroll supports with bun feet, the body with basket finial and cushion surmount to the pagoda top, embossed decoration of figures holding a model of a church, the sides and rear door with scroll edged narrative panels, the cream enamelled Roman dial with floral swag decoration and trefoil hour hand, the two train movement with lever platform escapement, half hour striking on a coiled gong, with exhibition stamp for Vincenti & Cie 1855, numbered 27066, the case with retailer's stamp "H GREAVES NEW ST B'HAM" over cursive monograms flanking a coat of arms and family motto "HONESTA QUAM MAGNA" (How Great are Honourable Deeds).  Case hallmarked London 1902.  Height including finial measures 12 inches (30.5cm).

The clock appears to have been recently cleaned and polished and displays general scratches, marks, wear and tarnishing. Remnants of old polish to the recesses. A few dints and bumps and a little wear to the detail of the high embossing. Obvious glue repair to one foot and consequently wobbles. The hallmarks are clear and legible. The movement has been converted from anchor to lever platform. There are two unused holes to the backplate. The clock is likely to originally have had a pendulum.
