Lot Description

Robert Oscar Lenkiewicz, (1941-2002)

A large oil painting on canvas.

Full length study of a lady dressed and wearing an orange coat standing before

a mirror reflecting a view of her back and the artist working at his easel.

Painted signature verso and detail 'Observations On The Theme of The Double', 'Project 18', 'St Antony Theme'

82.5" x 53.5" (210 x 136cm)

Robert Lenkiewicz planned 24 'Projects' throughout his painting career and was involved in Project 21 when he died. Project 18 uses the theme of 'The Temptation of St. Antony', the Abbot of the Desert who was waylaid by devils and diabolical visions. The theme warns against the 'power of women' and uses as a metaphor the mirror. Lenkiewicz wrote in one of his notebooks; "Relationships are mirrors. The painter looks into the mirror to paint himself; the lover looks into his lover to love himself".

At the Birmingham NEC in 1994, 105 of 182 Lenkiewicz paintings on show were taken from Project 18, many of 'The Painter with Women' and of ;St Antony Theme' - a list is viewable online at www.robertlenkiewicz.org.
