Albert Evans was born on the 18th of March 1874 in Barnard Castle. As a talented full-back Evans joined Aston Villa in August 1896 and was soon a regular in their first team. His opening season saw Aston Villa crowned champions of the football league, and during his time at the club they won the double in 1897 and the league a further 2 times, first in 1899 finishing ahead of Liverpool and again in 1900. During Evans’ career at Aston Villa he was plagued by injury and broke his leg three times, the last of these forced him to miss the 1905 FA Cup Final. Evans played with Aston Villa from 1896-1906, playing in a total of 206 games and during this time played alongside England striking legend Fred Wheldon. In October 1907 he was transferred to West Bromwich Albion. In December 1908 Evans broke his leg for a fourth time, at the end of that season he retired from playing professional football. He later worked as a coach in Sarpsborg, Norway which led to his appointment as manager of Coventry City in 1920. Following a variety of other occupations around the world, he returned to England in 1950 and joined the training staff at Aston Villa until 1956. Albert Evans died in Warwick on the 24th of March 1966.
