Lot Description
A fine and rare early 19th century French Empire ormolu mantel clock with musical movement. Circa 1820-30, having a 4.5" white-enamelled convex dial with Roman hours and Arabic minutes, inscribed "a Paris", the two-train movement, with silk suspension, numbered 289, outside countwheel-striking the half hours on a bell, the original oval wooden base enclosing a cylinder musical movement with 7.75"/20cm barrel and complete comb numbered 5360, connected to the clock movement via an internal rod, the fine case surmounted by a figure of Hermes or Mercury, wearing winged helmet (petasos), holding a pouch and winged caduceus, seated beside doves and clouds, the dial within drum-head housing over inverted breakfront base cast with flowering rods flanking cherub mask, the breakfront base with relief-cast panel between bearded male masks on six tapering feet fitting into the wooden base, the clock 19", (48cm) high, overall height including base and glass dome 24", (61cm).

Dial - excellent condition but no maker's name.
Movement - good orginal order, numbered but no maker's name. Musical part intact with complete comb.
Case - slight rub to back of left arm, and minor tarnishing to base - but overall exceptional original order.
Wooden plinth has minor wear, glass dome intact.
No pendulum.
