Lot 654

Lot Description

An early 18th century oak-cased 30-hour single-hand longcase clock. David Compigne, Winton, circa 1720. Having an 11-inch square brass dial, the signed silvered chapter ring with Roman hours and fleur-de-lis half hour divisions framing a quarter-hour track and a matted centre engraved with two birds over a date square, the knopped four-pillar movement outside countwheel-striking on a bell, the case with moulded flat cornice over plain hood door and long trunk door on a plain base with plinth, sold with weight and pendulum, 74.5", (190cm) high

Postage: Auction Default

Weight: No

Total lot weight: No

Dial - generally very good but a few dark spots to matted centre. Movement - has been cleaned and overhauled. Sometimes movements this early are 'birdcage' type and it is possible that a later C18th movement has been pinned to an early dial. Case - Cornice appears to be of later date. Some trunk door shrinkage (gapping to left edge). Hinges appear to be period but have blacks behind them raising them off the trunk surface. Plinth likely to be later. Surface is of uneven colour and patination.
