Lot Description

A good mid 18th century ebonised three-train chiming bracket clock by Daniel Vaughan, London, circa 1740-60. Having a 6" break-arched dial with signed silvered Roman chapter ring framing a matted centre with mock pendulum aperture over maker's cartouche, within scroll spandrels, the arch with silvered Strike/Silent ring, the chain-driven fusee movement now with anchor escapement (previously verge), chiming on a carillon of eight bells, the backplate finely engraved with foliage, the case having an ogee caddy top with brass bale handle over moulded cornice, brass foliate fretwork spandrels and caddy-moulded corners, the sides with brass roundels and foliate frets, on brass ogee bracket feet, 16.5", (42cm) high.

Total lot weight: No

Dial - needs cleaning and probable resilvering.

Movement - converted from verge to anchor. Third barrel necessitated cut-out to centre of seatboard. Backplate is unsigned and has a few minor holes.

Case - crack to door arch plus minor splits and scuffs: overall a bit tired but sound. There is a slight gap to the frame surrounding the dial when the front door is open.
