Lot Description

A fine George III ebonised table clock of small proportions. John Johnson, Gray's Inn Passage, London. Circa 1770, having a 5" break-arched brass dial, the silvered chapter ring with Roman hours and Arabic minutes framing a matted centre with spade-form hour hand, all within cast rococo spandrels, the arch with silvered subsidiary Strike/Silent ring, the wire-driven twin-fusee movement now with anchor escapement (previously verge), the finely-engraved foliate backplate signed as above, the case having an ogee caddy top surmounted by a leaf-capped brass bale handle over flambeau cup-and-cover finials, the canted front with cast mounts, on a brass plinth and ogee bracket feet, (13.75", (35cm) high excluding handle.

Total lot weight: No

Dial - slight tarnishing to chapter ring and a few small tarnish spots to centre.

Movement - converted from verge to anchor. Movement is tight in case so not possible to tell if 4- or 5-pillar. Three unused holes to backplate.

Case - five minor 'wrinkle' cracks to roof; similar to door surround and to sides - but nothing serious.
