Lot 704

Lot Description

A George III inlaid mahogany-cased 8-day brass dial longcase clock. Anonymous, circa 1780, having a 12" two-piece break-arched dial with Roman hours and Arabic minutes framing a foliate scroll-engraved centre with subsidiary seconds and date dials, the arch centred by a painted neoclassical urn, all within chevron banding, the knopped four-pillar movement rack-striking on a bell, the fine-quality case with pagoda-topped hood centred by a fretwork panel, over stop-fluted Corinthian columns with cast capitals, the conforming quadrants to the trunk flanking a moulded and crossbanded break-arched long door on a moulded base and wavy apron, 92.5", (235cm) high.

Postage: Auction Default

Weight: No

Total lot weight: No

Dial needs a clean - chapter ring may once have been silvered. It is unusual for the dial to be in two pieces, but the chevron engraving to both pieces appears contemporaneous. Seatboard not original to case so dial & movement may not be original to case

Movement - sound.

Case - has had a hood surmount. The spire finials are likely to be associated. The trunk door is warped, but otherwise the case is of good quality. Some minor worm scarring to oak backing boards
