Lot Description
An 18th century Anglo Indian ivory-inlaid hardwood box. Vizagapatam, the rectangular lid with ebony border framing a fine parquetry pattern of interlocking circles, four-pointed stars with dotted arms and lozenge centres, the underside with conforming spandrels and centre, the body with matching external decoration and embellished to the front with a pierced brass escutcheon and twisted handles with similar backplates, on a bombe plinth, 15" x 11.5" x 9" high, (38cm x 29cm x 23cm high), (internal alterations).
A box with matching decoration was sold by Anderson & Garland of Newcastle, 7th-10th December 2010, lot 1148. The handles and pierced backplates are based on European models of circa 1720.

Condition Report
Cover: ebony short side edge strips missing, losses to front left corner, small inlay loss.
Body - major depletions where bottom half of hinges screw into top edge of back panel. Minor repairs to left side panel inlay. front panel above drawers has screw holes from handles/backplates.
Interior - base lining to upper section has been reduced in width, as has the lining of the drawer beneath. Later pine walls to each side of this where there would have been a single long drawer - this should all be able to be replaced with old timber.
