Lot Description

A group of Castle Bromwich-related ephemera. Comprising: a portrait of Ida Newport, Countess Bradford (d.1894), depicted half-length in three-quarter profile facing to dexter, oil on artist's board, signed "Whitney" lower left, inscribed verso in pencil "Ida Newport 1878", 20.75" x 15.5", in gilt slip; a lithographic print of "Viscount Newport" (the Earl of Bradford), Vincent Brooks Day & Son Lithographers, image size including caption 13" x 7.5", (33cm x 19cm), in oak frame (unglazed); an unframed garden plan of "CASTLE BROMWICH HALL WARWICKSHIRE" by Harry W. Weedon, dated 1907, 24" x 35" (at fault); and a bundle of documents and correspondence relating to the Bradford family, including letters to and from Earl of Bradford, some addressed from Weston Park.

Provenance: the current owner was a sub-contractor working on the Bradford estate, and these items were given to him by the Estate Manager when clearing stable blocks, prior to the creation of Rectory Gardens.

A later portrait of the same sitter by Frank Brooks (1854-1937) is owned by the Weston Park Foundation and is viewable on the Bridgman Art Library website..

Boxed lot- sold as seen. All items in this lot are in worn and used condition. The print is water-damaged to the lower quarter (captioned area), is currently out of its frame and missing its backing. The garden plan is rolled and significantly torn. The gilt slip (no frame) to the painting is heavily flaked - the left side is almost bare. The letters are not collated and are sold as seen.
