Lot 711

Lot Description

An 18th century yellow metal mounted table snuff box. Testing as 18ct gold, the hinged circular cover inset with an oval hinged panel engraved with the cypher 'CC'  framed by neoclassical ribbon, bellflower pendants and floral swag, within guilloche outer border, opening to reveal a painted bust-length portrait miniature of a gentleman in stylish wig and white stock, seated facing to dexter, all within 'rose gold' banding, the conforming body with tortoiseshell-lined interior, 3.1", (8 cm) diameter (A/F, to restore).
The initials on the box, and the portrait, are believed to relate to a Cornelius Cayley (1692-1779), a practising barrister and sometime Recorder of Hull, whose family are thought to have come to England from Normandy, settling in Lincolnshire and then Yorkshire. The box hand been handed down through descendants of Cornelius Cayley before being acquired by the current owner.

Total lot weight: No

The box is in dismantled state. The cover is detached at the hinges and the portrait is fixed to the tortoiseshell lid liner but these are detached from the rest of the cover, The wavy trim around the portrait is loose. There are losses to the banding to left side of portrait. The edges of the cover are damaged where the hinge has sheared away - that immediately over the hinge is still affixed. The base band (foot rim) to the cover is detached but present. Height 1.75" (4.5cm), width 3" (7.5cm). Weight 158.6g as a whole

The body had two chunk depletions to the projecting tortoiseshell collar, and the base ring is detached but present. Overall there is much to restore, but the portrait is sound and there is good gold weight to the box.
