Lot Description
An 18th century pocket watch in 19th century watch-holder. Thomas Wentworth Junior, Sarum (Salisbury), the 1.75" white-enamelled Roman dial painted with a river scene, verge fusee movement with four tapering pillars, later-fitted with a short pendulum, the backplate signed "Tho. Wentworth Jun. Sarum 210", with finely engraved balance wheel cover pierced with opposed birds, the inlaid mahogany case with turned finial over chequer-strung edge framing a lozenge, on platform base with turned bone feet, 6.75", (17cm) high. A George Wentworth, son of Thomas Wentworth Senior, Watchmaker of Sarum, is recorded as apprenticed (enrolled and indentured) to the famous clockmaker and watchmaker John Knibb for seven years, commencing 5th April 1706.
