Lot Description
A pair of 19th century carved mahogany framed hall or library chairs. Each with an impressive carved and raised sheild shaped back, the scrolled tops flanked by gilded empire style carved eagles, each detailed and holding a ring within its beak (some missing), above central supports modelled as crossed axes. The painted armorial panels believed to related to the Leys School, Cambridge and the Coke family from Hertfordshire.. This design for the Leys School is believed to be not recorded before 1914. The rectangular shaped seats with drop in upholstered panels, the carved forelegs of square section form, detailed with bold carving of feathers, terminating with gilded claw feet and sabre rear supports. 37.5" high x 36" wide (95 cm x91.5cm), approximately 22" (56cm) deep.

Leys school chair - both wooden rings to eagles beaks broken, only stumps remain. Notches to top rail where rings sat. General rubbing to gilt. Head, wings and shield surround plus axe head splits to food of one eagle. General rubbing to seat edge. Cushion re-covered. General knocks and scuffs to back commensurate with age and use.
Coke family chair - crack through centre cresting. Rings broken as per first chair (more of rings remain). Rubbing to gilt of eagle heads. Seat and back in better order than first, only minor knocks, scuffs and wear.
