Lot Description
A late Victorian silver mounted crocodile-skin travelling case, comprising a sewing kit, note organiser, page turner, folding mirror, part manicure set, curling tongs, shoe horn, hip flask, cased brushes and various wrythen glass bottles, all with faux tortoiseshell and silver or silver-gilt fittings, each with the initials V.B. or V.W, with corresponding marquess or Freihermkrone (German-speakers Baron's coronet) . Hallmarks for Frederick Purnell, London 1889.
Purnell was in partnership at Pittway brothers, who were manufacturers of dressing bags, cases and fitted portmanteaux at 23 Hatton Garden, as well as having their wares retailed through Mechi & Bazin, Hancocks & Co and Ortner & Houle. One of the bottles also contains a fragrant substance, with black label to the base for Perkins & Co, 99 Piccadilly W, who sold pharmaceutical goods to royalty and celebrities alike, until 1972.

Condition Report
The lot is in fair overall condition with scratches and small dents, tears and chips in keeping with general wear. Some of the silver gilt fittings have lost their gilt finish. Not all the bottles are present. Some of the bottles have small chips. One bottle is a later addition and has a white metal screw top engraved with the Marquess of Bath's Motto and crest. The lining is torn at one edge of the hinged lid. The hip flask has a damaged silver mount and is missing the lid. Most of the manicure set is missing and there are sections for two silver thimbles, also missing. The leather wallet and case have the marquess coronet on, the case also has V.B. tooled to the front. There is minor wear and discolouration to the base of the case. The crocodile skin has discoloured. Some of the silver mounts are dented, most are tarnished.
