Lot Description

George II/George III silver matched pair of candlesticks, each with plain socket above a shouldered and knopped stem, leading to a shaped square base with scrolled rim and decorated with foliate and shell motifs to each corner, also engraved with a crest depicting a crown and plumage, with conforming decoration and crest to each detachable nozzle.  One candlestick hallmarked Phillips Garden, London 1742, the other hallmarked Ebenezer Coker, London 1770 (nozzles are unmarked).  Maximum height including nozzle measures 7 3/4 inches (19.5 cm), combined gross weight 37.98 ozt (1181.3 grams).

Postage: Auction Default

Weight: No

Total lot weight: No

Both candlesticks display general surface scratches, marks, wear and tarnishing commensurate with the age and use.  Seam lines are visible and there are some floods of solder around joins, which have now discoloured.  Deeper scratches to some areas and small nicks and dints.  Both central stems are leaning very slightly.  Both have some notch marks around rim of each socket and detachable nozzle.  Hallmarks on the earlier example around the edge of the base rim are slightly cut off but still legible, also part hallmarks around socket, which are quite distorted.  The later candlestick has very clear hallmarks to underside of base and a further punched mark around the socket, which is illegible.  Both detachable nozzles are unmarked.
