Great War 1914-15 Trio and LSGC to Ply 9917 L/Cpl Joseph Carless RMLI (Royal Marines). (4).
Joseph Carless was born in Walsall in 1882, Carless entered service with the Royal Navy joining the Royal Marine Light Infantry. It is believed that Carless survived the torpedoing and sinking of HMS Hemes on 31st October 1914 by German submarine U23, 22 crew were lost in the sinking. On the 15th June 1918 Carless was reported as missing in action. Joseph Carless’s 2nd cousin, John Henry Carless, was awarded the Victoria Cross, after being killed on HMS Caledon on the 17th November 1917, John Henry Carless’s VC now lies within Walsall Museum, and his bust to the entrance.
