Lot Description

A George II hooded wall clock by John Belling (I), Bodmyn (Bodmin), having a 9.25" square brass dial, the Roman chapter ring signed "Jno. Belling Bodmyn", with single hand, inner quarter hour track and tailed cruciform half hour divisions with copper studded tin baroque 'Crown and Cherub' spandrels, the lantern style posted movement converted from verge to anchor escapement, the ebonised case with pointed pediment over glazed front and sides 23.5" (59.5cm) high, sold with weight and pendulum.

A lantern clock by this maker dated 1753 is in the Bodmin museum. It is said that Belling used Cornish tin to decorate his clocks. After five generations of clock-making, the family diversified into stoves.

This type of movement was used on early longcase and late period lantern clocks as well as hooded wall clocks. The case is therefore possibly associated and shows signs of

alteration. Cracks to pediment (which is removable), loss to glazing of front, general cracks/fading to carcase, overall case requires complete overhaul. Movement coverted as per cataloguing but otherwise sound.

Fellows do not guarantee the working order or accuracy of any clocks sold.
