Lot 345

Lot Description

A Portuguese goblet of slightly flared form with a lobed lower border, the main body engraved all over with flowers and scrolling foliage, with globular studs and central vacant cartouche to the front, all raised above a knopped stem and spreading circular foot with foliate border detail.  Struck with the eagle mark for Lisbon, fineness .833, alongside a further struck mark and two further struck marks to the foot rim.  Height measures 9 1/4 inches (23.5 cm), weight 11.82 ozt (367.6 grams).

Postage: Auction Default

Weight: No

Total lot weight: No

The goblet displays general surface scratches, marks, wear and tarnishing commensurate with the age and use.  Some of the decorated areas display darker tarnishing.  Deeper scratches to some areas and various minor nicks.  Slight loss of detail to decoration.  Slight knock to foot rim.  Slight crack in metal is visible at the join of the base of goblet to top of stem.  Interior was probably once gilded, but this is now faded.  The main Portuguese hallmark around the top is clear and legible, however the other struck marks are more difficult to read.
