Sicily, Syracuse, an early 19th century copy of the Greek Decadrachm by Kimon circa 405-400 BC, the present coin the work of Carl Wilhelm Becker, head of Artemis left, dolphins around, rev. quadriga driven left, Nike above, wt. 70g, approximately 37mm (cf S 952 for type, and see Sir George F. Hill Becker the Counterfeiter Pl.II/26). Very fine or better, good workmanship.
Carl Wilhelm Becker (1772-1830), was a prolific German counterfeiter of Greek, Roman, medieval and later coins, enjoying a colourful career.
