Lot Description
A named mid 19th century Campaign-style brass-mounted coromandel and walnut dressing box. Cormack Brothers, London. The hinged cover and front with brass corner mounts and coromandel edging framing a figured walnut surface, the cover centred by a flush-fitted handle, enclosing a fitted interior crushed blue velvet lining beneath lid concealing a mirror and a pouch for billet doux, above removable shallow tray containing three glass toiletry bottles with silver-plated covers, a fourth entirely plated, and a blue plush pad for necessaire tools, three further divisions concealed beneath, the tray beside three further glass containers, ivory plaque inlaid to back edge "CORMACK BROTHERS MAKERS 37 LUDGATE HILL LONDON", 12" x 9" x 5.25" high, (30.5cm x 23cm x 13.5cm), with key.
The London Gazette of 21st September 1883 lists a Bankruptcy notice against "George Balfour Cormack...formerly trading with Wadham Cormack, since deceased, as Cormack Brothers at No. 37 Ludgate-hill".
