A Victorian treen 'life-preserver'. Of flexible 'truncheon' form, having a ribbed ball terminal on a hide attachment and wooden shaft, the handle with ribbed grip, 15.5", (39cm) long, sold with handwritten note of provenance dated March 1919: "This life preserver to be given to Betsy at my death in trust for Jack Burnie to be lept as an heirloom belonging to his great grandfather William Hall".

Typical wear (splits/scuffing) to hide. Tight crack to head of handle, 2cm loss to uppermost ring knop, 5cm dark scratch beneath, plus old grain split to pommel.
Good colour and patination.
