Lot Description
An Allchin 1.5" scale model live steam traction engine "Royal Chester", based on the engine design by W.J Hughes for the Royal Chester Show of 1925. Built by the current (Birmingham) owner over seven years in the 1960s. Specifications: single cylinder, two-speed general purpose engine. The engine has a brazed copper boiler with fittings including water gauge, pressure gauge, safety valve, blower, water lifter, clack and blowdown valves. Engine details include cylinder approximately 1 inch bore x 1 1/2 inch stroke, draincocks and pipes, displacement and mechanical lubricators, trunk type crosshead guide. Stephenson's link reverse, eccentric driven feed pump and bypass, and spoked flywheel, Pickering type governor, chassis details include spoked straked wheels, worm and roller chain steering, spud pan, damper, cable drum, fairleads, water lifter, hand brake to second shaft, wooden footboard with tool box under, padlock, spark arrester, bucket, coal shovel and stoking poker. The model finished in pillar box red livery with cast name plate, transfer label and plaque "Wm Allchin, Limited, Northampton, England", with spoked red metal wheels, rear wheels 22.5cm diameter, reg.no."CF 4162", overall length 26", (66cm), sold with blueprint construction plans.
This model was last steamed in 1972. Further to this it has been used as a stationary model running on compressed air and has been subjected to a hydraulic test of 200psi.
