(Major) Edward Mary Joseph Molyneux, (1866-1913).

View across an Indian mountain range, probably Kashmir,

Oil on canvas

Signed "E. Molyneux Lt. 3rd Dragoon Guards 1889" lower right
14" x 20", (35.5cm x 51cm), unframed.
This military artist, described in the National Register of Archives as 'Artist Major in the Indian Army', was commissioned to illustrate the book 'Kashmir' by Sir Francis Younghusband, publ. A. & C. Black, London, 1909. A folio of twenty-four watercolours of Kashmir by the artist were sold at auction in 2004, some being studies for prints illustrated in the book. A set of medal to Molyneux's son mention Molyneux Senior as awarded "CIE, CMG, DSO".

Slight crease where inner edge of stretcher has pressed against canvas. Reverse reveals dark tape and associated restoration to on edge, and a small glue-restored patch. Neither of these are apparent to front but would assume minor overpainting. A few minor scratches and paint marks here and there, plus small flake lower centre and a second lower right beside inscription..
