Lot Description

Follower of John Opie, (1761-1807). Portrait of a lady depicted half length in three quarter profile facing to dexter with hand clasped before a window. Wearing a bonnet, grey dress and chiffon scarf. Oil on canvas bearing signature and date 1797 lower left, inscribed to stretcher 'Miss Jane Austen by Opie 1747', further indistinct inscriptions to back of canvas, 29" x 24.5" (74cm x 62cm), in gilt slip and dark oak frame

General crazing/cracking to surface. Small 1cm patch to back of canvas plugging small tear visible to front (bottom right corner of window). some cracking to face. Would benefit from a clean and perhaps a lighter frame.
