Lot Description

A rare German 'black farmer' automaton by Hoyt.
With layered colour lithographic study of a bust-length negro figure, dressed in pink hat, blue and white checked shirt and dungarees, the open spring key-wind movement with wide governor, once actuated causing head to tilt left and right whilst mouth opens and closes and eyes narrow and dilate, 19.5" x 14.25", (49.5cm x 36cm), in silvered slip and dark oak frame under glass.

Possible minor flake to lip. Cream background is water-stained. Mechanism is quite crude and the outsized flywheel knocks against the backplate unless pulled away from the stalk. Would require restoration. Losses to frame moulding.
