J Shirley Fox (Exh 1890 - 1902), 'The Broken Pitcher' after John Baptiste Greuze (1725-1805), an oval portrait of a young girl before a fountain, oil on canvas, signed and dated 1884 to the canvas verso, 27.5" x 21.25" (70cm x 54cm), in rectangular gilt slip, laurel and acanthus decorated gilt frame, sold with handwritten biographical card stating "The Broken Pitcher after Greuze by John Shirley Fox...born around 1860, studied in Paris where his work was exhibited in salons from 1887 till 1889. He came to live in London in 1890 and exhibited at the Royal Academy and the Royal Society of Artists. a distinguished portrait with works in the Royal Collection. At the R A Exhibition of 1914 his important double portrait of King George V and Queen Mary was exhibited"
