Lot 14

Lot Description

An early George III silver coffee pot of baluster form with domed, hinged cover and footed base, embossed and chased throughout with flowers and foliage, acanthus leaf motifs to the spout, probably a later bird finial to the lid, the handle with ivory insulators enclosing a replacement early nineteenth century silver scrolled section, also with acanthus leaf decoration. Main coffee pot hallmarked Benjamin Bickerton, London 1763, the handle struck with part hallmarks at the base including the standard mark, duty mark for William IV and maker's mark for George Frederick Pinnell. Maximum height including finial measures 9 3/4 inches (25 cm), gross weight 30.8 ozt (959 grams).

Export issue: Yes

Postage: Auction Default

Weight: No

Total lot weight: No

The coffee pot displays general surface scratches, marks, wear and tarnishing commensurate with the age and use.  Some heavier areas of tarnishing are visible.  General minor nicks in the metal throughout and some deeper scratches, also some minor surface dints and bumps.  Overall, the decoration is still good.  There is a flood of solder to one of the flowers near to the base, indicating a possible repair.  The hinged lid is in working order.  The bird finial is likely to be a later replacement.  Main hallmarks are located around the top of the coffee pot and these are clear and legible.  Part hallmarks on the handle are located at the base, just above an ivory insulator, and they are also clear and legible.
