Lot 32

Lot Description

A George III silver open salt of oval form with beaded rim, the vertical pierced sides with vacant cartouche, engraved garland decoration and further pierced bands of circle and triangular motifs, the whole with blue glass liner and raised above four claw and ball feet, hallmarked London 1787, maker probably Richard Rugg. Together with a similar Victorian example, hallmarked Martin, Hall & Co (Richard Martin & Ebenezer Hall), Sheffield 1868. Length of both measures 3 1/2 inches (9 cm), combined silver weight 3.4 ozt (105.8 grams).

Postage: Auction Default

Weight: No

Total lot weight: No

Both salts display general surface scratches, marks, wear and tarnishing commensurate with the age and use.  Some slight loss of detail to decoration in places.  The base rim on the Georgian example is very slightly misshapen.  Both wobble a little when standing.  On the George III salt, the maker's mark is partly distorted but other marks are clear and legible.  There is also some slight distortion to the hallmarks on the Victorian salt but they are still legible.  Some minor rim nicks and chips to the glass liners, probably replacement.
