Henry Mosler, (American 1841-1920), 'The Spinning Lesson', two figures in a cottage interior, oil on canvas, signed lower right. 35.5" x 27.5", (90cm x 70cm). In gilt slip and fine swept gilt frame. Mosler moved from Silesia (now Poland) to New York in1849 aged 8 and soon relocated to a large Jewish community in Cincinnati, Ohio. He was firstly apprenticed as a wood engraver before becoming a draughtsman for the local newspaper, aged just 14. After involvement as an artist in the American Civil War, he enrolled in the Royal Academy in Dusseldorf, Germany, and after a few years back in Cincinnati he then studied for a further three years in Munich, before moving to France where a number of works were exhibited at the Paris Salons, 1879-1889. His works can be seen in the Smithsonian, Huntington Library and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, amongst others.
