Lot Description
Stanley Webb Davies, (1894-1978), a 1930s easy chair, the dowelled slatted back between open arms extending as front legs, the solid seat between side rails extending as rear legs, incised monogram SWD and date 1939 beneath one arm, plus further incised monogram EJO for Ernest J. Oldcorn (1894-1968), 28" (72cm) high, sold with original cushions (in later covers).
Ernest Oldcorn was born in Kendal and trained under the renowned craftsman Arthur Simpson, working on the oak carving at Blackwell House, Windermere. He was the master carver and foreman at Stanley Davies’s workshop until he retired in 1959.
Provenance: Sold with photostat receipt from Liberty of London date June 1991, when purchased by the current owner.
