Lot Description

Stanley Webb Davies, (1894-1978)
A rare set of six Arts & Crafts oak dining chairs, each having a dowelled panel back with notch-carved inner border, the sunken solid seat on chamfered square section legs with plain stretchers, incised monogram EJO for Ernest J. Oldcorn (1894-1968) behind each front seat rail, the chairs 16.75" wide at the front of seat x 37.25" high, (42.5cm x 94cm). Ernest Oldcorn was born in Kendal and trained under the renowned craftsman Arthur Simpson, working on the oak carving at Blackwell House, Windermere. He was the master carver and foreman at Stanley Davies’s workshop until he retired in 1959.
Provenance: Probably from an original set of ten made for William Uttley Esq., Westwood, Nelson, Lancs, sold for £85 and mentioned on a photostat of the original 1939 receipt which accompanies this lot. Purchased by the current owners from Liberty of London in January 1992, sold with photostat receipt, plus original cushion pads (in later zip covers).
Stanley Davies was born in Darwen, Lancashire, and opened his workshop in Windermere where himself, his wife Emily and a team of artisan craftsmen produced high quality pieces, examples of which can now be seen at such Lake District museums as Blackwell and Abbot Hall.
