Lot 39

Lot Description

An early Victorian silver matched three piece tea service comprising teapot, twin handled sugar basin and cream jug, each of bulbous shape, chased and embossed with scrolling foliage and floral motifs surrounding vacant and crested cartouche, and raised above four foliate scroll feet, the teapot slightly differing in design with acanthus leaf capped handle with ivory insulators and flower finial to the lid. All hallmarked London 1837 with William IV Duty mark, the teapot with maker's mark for George Hunter II, the sugar and cream jug with maker's mark 'WC'. Maximum length of teapot measures 10 1/2 inches (26.5 cm), gross weight 43.9 ozt (1366 grams).

All the pieces in the lot display general surface scratches, marks and wear commensurate with the age and use.  Heavy tarnishing is visible and they would all benefit from a clean and polish.  Remnants of polish are visible throughout.  Numerous surface dints and bumps are visible to all pieces.  Also possible removal of crests to some of the cartouche.  In addition, on the teapot and cream jug, the crest appears to be engraved on an oval patched in section.  At the base of the teapot handle, there appears to be a small rectangular panel fixed onto the side, possibly for reinforcement?  The interiors of the sugar basin and cream jug appear gilded but do display some wear.  Some slight rubbing and distortion but hallmarks and part hallmarks are mainly legible.
