Lot 43

Lot Description

A Victorian silver claret jug, of baluster form above a footed base, engraved to the main body with a Roman or Greek god in a horse drawn chariot alongside a female figure and with further classical figures and scenes around a vacant cartouche, the slender neck rising to a shaped rim and tall loop handle modelled with a grotesque style mask and female heads.  Hallmarked London 1860 with maker's mark 'WS', possibly William Smily. Height including handle measures 13 3/4 inches (35 cm), weight 21 ozt (652.7 grams).

Postage: Auction Default

Weight: No

Total lot weight: No

The jug displays general surface scratches, marks, wear and tarnishing commensurate with the age and use.  Some deeper scratches and nicks are visible and there are also general surface dints and bumps.  There is some loss of detail to decoration in places.  Seam or construction marks are visible to the top of the handle.  Interior was likely once gilded but this is now faded.  Hallmarks are located at the top of the neck, they are rubbed but still clearly legible.
