Trooper James Ashton responded to a call for volunteers to serve in the Imperial Yeomanry in Doncaster on 5th February 1901, having previously been employed as a joiner and served for four years in the King’s Own Yorkshire Light Infantry. He was awarded the Queen’s South Africa Medal upon his return and discharge in August 1902 along with the Freedom of the City of Wakefield.
