A fine Japanese Meiji period bronze figure of Benkei holding a koro
Signed Miyao (Eisuke, of Yokohama), the legendary strongman seated wearing gilt-enriched armour breastplate, holding aloft a tripod censer with Dog of Fo finials, seated with one paw on a brocade ball, the koro body relief decorated with gilt dragons, the cloak signed to the reverse with gilt cartouche 'Miyao', raised upon a wooden stand with four supports, decorated in takamaki-e, overall height 13.75" (35cm).
A larger, but comparable, figure was sold at Bonhams Fine Japanese Works of Art, New York, 19th March 2008, lot 5243.
