Lot Description

A good George III ivory and tortoiseshell tea caddy, circa 1790, of decagonal form, the hinged cover with brass c-scroll handle framed by mother-of-pearl dot decoration within tortoiseshell edge stringing, enclosing a lidded compartment, the conforming body with edge stringing, the front inlaid with mother-of-pearl swags and pendants framing a vacant shield cartouche, 4.25" x 2.75" x 4.25" high, (100cm x 7cm x 11cm), with key. Provenance: Private collector, Wirral. By descent from grandfather who reputedly worked for The Dutch East India Company in its final years (ex. inf. vendor).

Export issue: Yes

Cover has vertical crack to front and rear panels. Four tortoiseshell edge strips missing, body has a 2cm edge loss to tortoiseshell (lower left hand side of front panel). Otherwise ivory (and most of tortoiseshell) is in excellent original order, with good colour/patination. Good private source.
