English School (late 18th century), portrait of a young boy, said to be Archibald Ross (1786-1826), depicted aged approximately seven or eight years of age, in white costume with pink sash belt, holding two sticks, in a clearing before a loggia with figures, oil on canvas, indistinctly inscribed lower left, later annotated verso '4.2.56 Portrait of Archibald Ross 21 March 1786-31 August 1826. For Lau', with loose note in the same hand dated 22nd October 1970 'Portrait of Archibald Ross 1786-1826 (my great grandfather) Painter unknown, about 1790. Cleaned 17th September 1970 EJR', 15.75" x 10.25" (40cm x 26cm), in foliage moulded gilt frame.

Canvas is taut on stretcher but not relined. Surface cleaned, removeing some depth for face. General surface cracking/crazing. Gilt rubbed to frame.
