A good George III fruitwood-cased triple fusee chiming bracket clock
(Robert?) "Philp [or Philip], London", circa 1780
The 7.5-inch break-arched dial having a silvered chapter ring with Roman hours, Arabic minutes and cruciform half-hour divisions, engraved "Philp London" framing a matted centre with subsidiary calendar ring, within scroll spandrels, the arch with silvered Strike/Silent ring, the four-pillar wire-driven movement with anchor escapement, chiming on a carillon of eight bells via a pin-barrel and striking on a ninth, the backplate engraved with a basket of fruit and "Philp London" within foliate scrollwork, the case with lacquered foliate-cast carry handle over bell caddy top and moulded cornice , the arch-glazed door with blind fretwork spandrels and bone kite escutcheon between canted corners, on moulded base and flattened bun feet, 19.25", (49cm) high excluding handle.
Literature: Ord-Hume, 'The Musical Clock', Mayfield Books 1995, p. 318, records that Robert Philip (Philp) worked at 6 New Court, St John Street, Clerkenwell between 1777 and 1811, producing musical clocks, watches and astronomical clocks, including one exhibited in the Peiping Museum, China.

Condition Report
Dial - chapter ring and Strike/Silent ring are both tarnished. Some wax infill to numerals. Slight gap around dial plate within frame.
Movement - large hole over engraved fruit basket, two holes to sides (these pair may be for securing L-brackets to sides of case). Pin barrel replaces where fifth pillar would be.
Case - may have been ebonised? Sides and rear door are glazed, should perhaps have silk-backed brass frets. Later catch. Front door is locked with no key. Sold with winder plus pendulum.
