Lot 578

Lot Description

A George III silver vinaigrette, of plain oblong form with stippled borders, later personal engraving to the base, the hinged lid decorated with leaf motifs and opening to reveal a silver-gilt grille with simple drilled holes in a diamond shape.  Hallmarked Matthew Linwood, Birmingham 1810.  Measuring 3.1 cm by 2.2 cm, weight 11.9 grams.

Postage: Auction Default

Weight: No

Total lot weight: No

The vinaigrette appears in fairly good overall condition, displaying general surface scratches, marks, wear and tarnishing commensurate with the age and use.  Heavier wear around edges and corners, also some deeper scratches and nicks are visible to some areas.  Hinges appear in working order.  Remnants of polish to interior.  Gilding appears quite bright.  The hallmarks are clear and legible.  The inscription to the base reads 'Mary Isabel Taunton, 2nd August 1867, In Memoriam'.
