Lot Description

A good early 18th century chinoiserie cased longcase clock, with dial and movement by Thomas Stubbs, London. The 11-inch square dial with silvered chapter ring having Roman half hour divisions, minutes and inner quarter hour track, signed 'Tho Stubbs London', framing a matted centre with silvered subsidiary seconds dial and terrestrial calendar square within Baroque mask spandrels, the later arch with silvered sun-engraved boss, the knopped and finned five-pillar movement internally countwheel striking on a bell, the associated George II case with stepped hood, blind fretwork frieze, turned columns and gilt decoration over a moulded long trunk door with figures and pavilions, the conforming base on stepped plinth, 93" (236cm) high.

Total lot weight: No

Two-piece dial (arch later-fitted but a decent match).
Chapter ring relacquered. Movement has had bell moved, some holes to backplate where altered.
Case - finials may be later. Crack to arch over hood. Full length join/split to centre of trunk door.
General knocks and dints to base commensurate with age. Lacquer is quite a 'muddy' green.
Overall - marriage of dial & movement to a marginally later case.
