Lot 119

Lot Description

An early Victorian silver wine coaster, of circular form with shell and scroll rim above fretwork pierced sides, the silver mounted wood base further decorated with floral and foliate scroll engraving surrounding a central crest. Hallmarked Joseph Angell I & Joseph Angell II, London, date letter distorted but likely 1840. Overall diameter measures 6 1/2 inches (16.5 cm).

Postage: Auction Default

Weight: No

Total lot weight: No

The coaster displays general wear including surface scratching, marks and knocks commensurate with the age and use. Several areas of damage and obvious repairs to the pierced sides. Also some splits in the metal and slight lifting at the base rim where the silver mounts the wood. Quite heavy tarnishing is visible and it  would benefit from a clean and polish. The hallmarks and maker's marks appear rubbed but are still mainly legible.
