Lot Description

A James I/Charles I West Country silver Apostle spoon, the oval bowl with faint pricked initials 'IF' over '1631 CD', St John Apostle terminal with sacred dove nimbus, traces of gilding. Hallmarked Exeter with the maker's mark for Edward Anthony (1612-67) struck three times, see English Goldsmiths and their marks, Jackson, marks on Exeter Plate, 1620. Length measuring 7 5/8 inches (19.5 cm), weight 1.5 ozt (48.9 grams).

Postage: Auction Default

Weight: No

Total lot weight: No

Some expected rubbing with loss of definition to the Apostle, bowl and details of the spoon. Some of the detail to the Apostle terminal remains. Traces of gilding predominately to the Apostle, but also visible to other areas across the spoon. Exeter mark to the inner bowl is partly worn and erased. The personal engraving to the bowl reverse is very worn and faint. A little dimpling/pitting visible to the surface. There is some wear to the bowl edges, particularly the striking edge, also a little thin and the overall appearance now a little asymmetrical. Indent visible to the V Heel. Considering age, the maker's marks to the stem reverse appear in most clear and legible. The condition stated above is also demonstrated in the 9 additional images available to view online, if you would like any of the images in higher resolution or have any further questions please do not hesitate to contact the department.
