Lot Description
A Charles I silver Apostle spoon, faint pricked initial engraving to the reverse of the bowl above the date 1650, the facetted stem also engraved 'ST BARTHOLOMEW DATE 1638', traces of gilding to the Apostle terminal. Hallmarked London, probably 1639, the maker's mark possibly a conjoined H L, see English Goldsmiths and their marks, Jackson, London goldsmith's marks 1638-9. Length measuring 7 1/4 inches (18.5 cm), weight 1.5 ozt (49.7 grams).

Condition Report
Overall the spoon appears in pleasing condition. Expected rubbing with loss of definition to the Apostle, bowl and details of the spoon. Some of the detail to the Apostle terminal remains. Doming of the nimbus, flattening with loss of detail and definition of the sacred dove. Traces of gilding to the terminal. Surface blemishes to the bowl reverse. A little wear to the bowl edges. `V` joint just visible under breath to the top of the stem/base of the terminal plinth. The hallmarks vary, the leopards head to the inner bowl and the lion passant to the stem appear clear and legible, maker's mark and date letter significantly rubbed. Personal engraving to the stem remains clear. Personal engraving to the bowl reverse worn and faint.
