Lot 532

Lot Description

A late Victorian silver playing cards case, of plain rectangular form with engraved monogram to the front, the hinged lid opening to an interior with central dividing bar to hold two sets. Hallmarked James Deakin & Sons (John & William F Deakin), Chester 1899. Height measures 3 inches (7.6 cm), weight 3.37 ozt (105 grams).

The case displays general wear in keeping with the age and use and including surface scratches, marks, wear and tarnishing. Many of these scratches and nicks are quite deep with denser patches to some areas. Some slight dints. Heavier wear around edges and to corners. There is a split in the join on one of the corners of the lid, near to the hinge. As a result of this, the lid overhangs slightly when in the closed position. Interior likely once gilded, now a little tarnished and discoloured. Various contact marks and remnants of polish. Some slight rubbing but the hallmarks and maker's marks are clear and legible.
