A good Japanese Meiji period tanto or ko-wakizashi, the straight 11.5-inch (29cm) blade, signed within the handle, partly fullered and with tapered top edge, the bronze tsuba with basket weave effect, 'island' motif and incised fuchi single character, the handle with band of fish, finely worked in two colours, over cord-bound shagreen, the two menuki each a fish being devoured by another, the copper kashira with flat fish (ray) terminal, the 17.25-inch scabbard or sheath with similar fish motifs, and a decorated lug, overall length 23.5" (59.5cm).
